About

In summer 2022, I joined the Foster project at MIT Media Lab, Affective computing team as a research assistant. This project aims to design technology that supports healing and care for foster-involved youth in Mass. My role involved analyzing user research data, contributing to ideation, and designing the branding and the interface of social interactions and daily check-ins.

______

Challenge

Foster youth lacks vital support

In the first stage of our research, I conducted literature review and evaluated 22 user interviews with foster youth to understand their challenges and pain points.

Weak Networks

Foster youth lack necessary supportive connections.

Limited Resource

Inadequate system limits essential information access.

Adulting Challenges

Transition to adulthood presents significant challenge and stress.

What are foster youth looking for?

To better understand foster youth's needs, I categorized users into 4 psychographics based on user interviews, which helped me and my research team identify 4 key user needs.

Connectors

  • want to build friendship, connect with people who have similar experience,
  • Seldom has a place in their life to talk about their experienc
  • 18 participants

Helpers

  • want to help those who are like them, give advice, share their own experience as a way to inspire others
  • would like to share resources, information, motivational quotes
  • 16 participants

Seeker

  • want to find advice, help, support, and resources
  • Would post questions and look for advice and read through other’s post to see their experience
  • 10 participants

Thinker

  • want to share their own journey for self-reflection
  • Hope to motivate themselves by recording their progress
  • 8 participants

______

Ideation

How might we increase social support for foster youth?

From the insights I learned from user interviews and psychographics, I brainstormed 2 prototypes with my research team to prototype.

1. Weekly questions

To address the need for peer connection and advice-sharing, I proposed a prototype that's focused on weekly questions feature.

Weekly Prompts

Weekly, users can answer a peer's prompt or submit their own prompt.

WHY: a platform for foster youth to seeking advice from peers.

Community Forums

Responding to a prompt unlocks the related community forum.

WHY: encourages dialogue, engagement, and connection

Archived Information

Forums are archived weekly for users to revisit past discussions.

WHY: providing easy access of peer-sourced information

2. Daily Check-ins

To address the desire for self-reflection and help-seeking, I proposed a prototype that's focused on daily check-ins feature.

Daily Check-In

User checks in a highlight (rose), potential (bud), and challenge (thorn).

WHY: a platform for foster youth to reflect on their day.

Community Engagement

After daily check-ins, user will unlock peer check-ins feed.

WHY: encourages dialogue and peer support

Calendar Memory

Users can revisit and reflect on their past posts in memory calendar.

WHY: a place for foster youth to reminisce and recognize growth.

______

Validation

Weekly questions or check-ins? Both!

In the second stage of research, I evaluated 24 interviews to find out what worked and what didn't work for users. I learned that...

70.8%

user prefer the check-in prototype

Because...

  • It’s very personalized.
  • People will have more chance to relate.
  • like how it encourage reflection

Among those 70.8%

25%

would also like to combine the 2 prototypes

Because...

  • will give more diverse prompts
  • can both build community and get support
  • like all the prototypes

In addition

Some important feature foster youth want to add....

Anonymity

It's crucial to ensure privacy and a safe space

Post Emotion Tags

Helps them articulate feelings and foster reflection.

Content Filter

Prevents triggers and better promotes engagement.

______

Redesign

Combining the two

Pulling from usability test insights, I refined the daily check-in user flow with my reserach team.

What's new

Tags, check-ins, and questions

  • User now complete a daily check-in of a high (a highlight), a low (a challenge), and an optional question / message (if they choose to ask for help or share esteem help)
  • User are also asked to choose an emotion tag to represent their feeling when checking in, helping to them to learn to identify their feelings.
  • Users have the option for to share their check-in with the community or keep it private.

What's new

Filter and separate reactions

  • User now can filter content based on demographic information so they can find posts from others who are similar to them.
  • User now can also react to highs, lows, and the whole post separately through emoji, giving them an easier way to provide support if they don't feel comfortable commenting.

What's new

Emoji dates and private setting

  • Past posts now are represented by the emotion tag (emoji) selected on that day, so users can see their change and progress of reflection across time.
  • User now have the option to change their previously public post to private in the memory calendar.

Branding

Playful, colorful, and dark mode

In interviews, 40% of users requested more colors, favoring green. Nearly all preferred a dark mode. Responding to this, I crafted a playful yet calming interface, utilizing green and yellow accents with waves and spheres to evoke a vibrant, serene atmosphere.

I picked "Sphere" as the app name because it symbolizes a space for connection and support. I then designed multiple logo variations based on the themes of sphere and waves, with the final iteration selected after receiving heuristic feedback from research team.

______

Impact

Increased social support

After running a 2-week pilot study, I analyzed quantitative using R.

11%

Sphere increased perceived social support by

80%

of users would recommend Sphere to others

67%

users felt more understood with Sphere

For confidentiality reasons I have omitted the actual values for these metrics.
